I'm silent for several moments as I process this sudden development in my life.
"... But why?"
"Why what?"
"Why did you summon me?"
She has a look on her face like she didn't consider this. "To see if I could, I guess."
"Well, I was having a nice sleep and I have trouble falling asleep so after I'm done doing whatever it is I need to do here it'll take me at least an hour to get back to it. And I have a very low tolerance for sleep deprivation, so basically because you summoned me I'm going to be tired all day tomorrow. So we may as well make this forced abduction worth something, and you give me a reason for being here so I don't feel like my day was ruined for nothing."
"I'm... Sorry. I wasn't thinking about that." Her tone suddenly shifts from apologetic to indignant. "But you humans do the same thing! You know, once I was summoned in the middle of karaoke? You know how much it sucks to be having a fun night out with your friends, and then suddenly be staring at a confused group of humans in robes wondering why you were singing Katy Perry as you came into their world?"
"Sure, and I'm sure that sucks. But I've never summoned a demon, so you can't blame me for that."
"Well, the selection was random. Like I said, I wasn't looking for anything in particular, just trying to see if I could do it..."
"Random?" I don't know much about magic, but I know that nothing in it is truly random. "What do you mean by that?"
"Well... I picked your name out of a phone book."
"A phone book? Those still exist?"
"Only in hell."
That's fair. "But why my name?"
"Well... It was a nice name."
"Thanks, I guess? That's not random though, you selected it for a reason."
She sighs in frustration. "Ugh, you know what I mean! Yes, I didn't choose you by the roll of a die or by interpreting atmospheric noise, but it was practically random. Anyone could have had that name."
I start to make a point, then realize it doesn't matter. The more I talk about this, the more I feel like I'm just wasting my time. I take a second to compose myself. "Okay, so, what do you want? Normally, humans summon demons to do something for them that humans can't do. What's something you want me to do that a demon can't do?"
She taps a finger on her cheek as she thinks. "Let's see, what can you do that I can't? You can go to church, drink holy water, eat salt, touch silver, take a stake through the heart-"
"Actually, that kills humans too."
"Really? Huh. Anyway... Oh! I know!" She leans down to me. "You can let me possess you, and I can enjoy a little time as a human."
"Nuh uh. No way. I like being in control of my own body, thank you." I consider if I should say the next thought on my mind, and even though it's risky decide to do it out of pure confusion. "Besides, since when do you need our permission to possess us? Isn't the whole point that it's involuntary?"
"Involuntary possession is exhausting and messy. It's like riding a horse that's constantly trying to buck you off. You have to dedicate most of your energy just to regain control. If you just let me into your body, it's like a smooth drive in a sports car. Most demons don't get to experience it, it usually only happens with summons from some of the more far out there cults."
"Uh huh. And what do I get out of this? You demons always demand some kind of price, so I can too. Your first born child, your soul, whatever. For the record, I'm not interested in any of that."
"Why are you asking me? I summoned you, that's for you to decide."
I scan the landscape as I contemplate this. Noticing something interesting, I stand for the first time and walk to a small pile of rocks at the foot of a mountain. I examine some. They're not like anything I've seen on Earth.
"Can I have some of these rocks?"
"What?"
"Yeah. The rocks, pieces of the ground, maybe even let me do a bit of digging." When the confused look doesn't leave her face I add, "I'm a geologist."
She looks like she has something sarcastic to say, but holds her tongue. "You're the boss. One day of possession in exchange for some rocks."
"Woah woah woah. One whole day? I thought you meant for like, ten minutes."
"What would I possibly get done in ten minutes?"
"I don't know."
"If you want to change your mind-"
"No, the deal is still good. I'm just going to need a whole lot of rocks for that."
She smirks and extends her hand to me. "Whatever you say, rock-man."
As we shake hands, a dark seal appears on the backs of our hands, indicating a deal has been made.
The Summoned Geologist
Reddit writing prompt: You suddenly wake up to find yourself in a glowing rune circle. In the distance, jagged black mountains claw into a blood colored sky. A demoness stands before you holding a large tome. She adjusts her glasses. "I knew it! If you can summon us, there had to be a way we can summon you."
